NURUL AZIZ

Assalamualaikum. Hi.

Malaysia is under Movement Control Order (MCO) right now due to COVID-19. I don't want to talk about the MCO itself because I can no longer process all the negative ridiculous things Malaysian did during this MCO.

Today I'm going to talk about what do I do during this MCO so far. People have been sharing their activities during MCO and I found some to be helpful. Here's mine ;

Making Dalgona Coffee
Day 1 - I started off the day like a usual lazy weekend. On my lazy weekends, I usually start my day with making myself a cup of coffee. However two days before MCO started, Dalgona Coffee started trending on Twitter so I tried making that coffee and now I'm all about the coffee. Luckily Ira, my little sister is home with me so I can ask her to make me one whenever I feel like it because after the first day, I'm too lazy to make my own Dalgona. Hahaha. Joke aside, I'm glad she decided to come to my house a day before MCO started. At least she's not alone without family members at her place.

Here the recipe of the famous Dalgona Coffee in case you can't found one but I doubt it because it's all over the place now. But of course I don't really follow the recipe because I know it'll be too sweet for me.

Dalgona Coffee

Ingredients
2 tea spoon of instant coffee (I use Nescafe Gold)
1 table spoon of sugar (I only put 1/2 table spoon)
2 table spoon of hot water
Fresh milk (I use Magnolia fresh milk)

Directions
Whisk instant coffee, sugar and hot water together until fluffy
Pour fresh milk in a cup/glass
Heat the milk in the microwave if you want it hot (I heated it at 50°C for 2 minutes) or put ice cube in the glass if you want it cold.
Pour the fluffy mixture into the cup/glass of fresh milk
Mix them well before drinking

Reading

On the first day I finished rereading Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince that stuck with me since December last year. Then I started reading Empayar by Teme Abdullah and finished it the next day. I was skeptical about the book at first because the language is too simple. Hahaha. But the strength of Teme Abdullah's writing is not on his words but the storyline. However that's just my opinion. I just read two of his book so far. Empayar and Pelukis Jalanan. Then I tried to pick up Brilliant Blunders where I last stopped and oh boy how I procrastinate from reading because of this book. So I decided to put it back on the shelf and read The Leviathan Wakes instead.

Leviathan Wakes is the first book of The Expanse novel series (the book is adapted into my ultimate favourite TV series) that consist of nine novels. I wanted to read Leviathan Wakes since long time ago but I stop myself each time just because it was at the bottom of my to read list. The reason why it was at the bottom of my to read list is not because I don't like the book but because it was the last book I bought despite my book buying ban and also because I don't want to finish the book without having the second book in my hand. It'll be a torture to have to wait for the second book to arrive. If you don't understand my cycle of thought, here I summarize it for you.

I need to finish all the books I bought earlier than Leviathan Wakes or I won't lift the book buying ban I impose on myself. So if I read Leviathan Wakes first without lifting the book buying ban, I won't be able to buy the second book and that's a torture. I feel like a psycho now after reading these sentences again. Also, since the TV series had just concluded its fourth season, I'm torn between reading the book in sequence according to its adaption on the screen or reading it all in, effectively spoiling the TV series for me. But yesterday I said to myself, let me deal with the torture and dilemma later. I just want to read Leviathan Wakes now! And so I do.

Watching
I know there are a lot of movies and series suggested by netizen but for now I'm content with Itaewon Class and season 4 of 1 Night 2 Days. I only watch them when I'm eating and only finished one episode each feeding sessions. Hahaha. I don't binge watch nowadays because I realized I always keep my hand busy when I'm watching something and the easiest thing to do is playing games on my phone but that didn't only keep my hand busy but also my eyes and attention and I'll neglect whatever movies or series on the TV. But now I'm on episode 10 of Itaewon Class, I'm starting to worry about what to watch next and being a picky watcher doesn't help at all.

Everything else
Other than the above activities, there are also boring activities like vacuuming and mopping the house, pruning and watering the plants, cooking and etc.

What's your activities during this MCO?

Thank you for reading.

Assalamualaikum. Hi.

There are two types of reader in this world. One who read books with care and one who don't. I was once of those people who read books with care. I hated creased spine the most. I don't remember how does it started but I still remember my first book with underlined sentences and jotted down notes. It was the Why Mars and Venus Collide book. Since then, I don't mind if my books are full with pencil or pen marks. Useful marks and not some random scribble, alright! I also don't mind anymore if my books no longer in pristine condition after I finished reading them.

I just finished re-reading Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix (I read the Bahasa Malaysia version by the way) actually when I noticed how bad the condition of the spine and cover. Every Harry Potter's fans will know that The Order of The Phoenix is the longest and thickest book in Harry Potter series. It was so hard for me to hold the book while reading it because it was heavy and I read everywhere, like literally.  I'd be on the sofa in living room and the next minute I'd be on the bed. Sometimes I walked around the house too while reading. I could go to the kitchen, getting some water and wetted my book. I read in the toilet too sometimes. Please don't judge me 😓.

The old me wouldn't like it. But I grow to love worn out books now. Given I am the one who make those books worn out of course. It just shows that I read them passionately. But I'd still be mad if people borrow my books and don't handle them right. Don't we all hate that? Hahaha. Also, people who fold pages to mark the place they last read are devil.

So what kind of reader are you? Do you scribble useful things on your book? Do you have specific place to read? Are you guilty of reading in the toilet too?

Assalamualaikum. Hi.

Artemis by Andy Weir. I'm not kidding when I said I was on post-reading blues yesterday but it's only right I cure the blues right away by reading this gem. Hahaha. I came to know about this book when I browsed @goodreads best books of the year and since I was reading Endurance at that time, I went straight to science fiction category. Not expecting any books would caught my eyes. But I was wrong. I saw the winner, I saw Andy Weir name there and the rest is history. . Bought this one from MyTown MPH. . #artemis #artemisandyweir #andyweir #nunureads

Another book from Andy Weir, of course I'm excited. Read about how The Martian is my favourite ever here, I READ : THE MARTIAN. So I was sure Artemis gonna be great too. I don't like books written by male author in the past but judging from all the books I reviewed here (all of them are from male author) it's safe to say my preference on books changed. I no longer could read chic lit like I used to, I don't know why. Age factor I guess?

ABOUT THE BOOK (Goodreads)
Artemis is actually the name on the city on moon. This book is about Jasmine Bashara, a girl who live on moon and work (legally) as a porter and also a professional (illegal) smuggler. She smuggle all sort of illegal items to moon with the help from a friend on Earth. The city is small so not many could afford an decent apartment as they are expensive. Jazz dream is to be rich so she could buy an apartment with bathroom because she hate her current coffin-size apartment and communal bathroom. So when a billionaire offer her a million slugs (sort of Artemis currency) to sabotage the one and only company who control aluminium industry on moon, she accept it. Little did she know the task not only put her life in danger but also put the whole city in danger.

Artemis

FUN FACTS
1. Artemis is actually the name of goddess of the moon. According to Greek mythology, she was the daughter of Zeus and Leto and she was also the twin sister of Apollo.

2. As expected from Andy Weir, he tried to make the science accurate. He took moon condition seriously and incorporate them in this book.

"I tried to be as accurate as possible. It's even more scientifically accurate than The Martian. And in fact, even though it takes place many decades later than The Martian takes place, it has less projected technology, so to speak. Like in the Martian, the propulsion system for Hermes is a VASIMR drive, which exists but would need a lot of development before it got to the point that it was at in The Martian. In Artemis, literally everything there is stuff that is real. All the technology shown in Artemis is real. It exists today. In that form too" - Andy Weir (source : Inverse)

3. SPOILER ALERT
We all know Russia and America are two big power when it comes to space race but in Artemis, it's neither Russia nor America who colonized moon. It was Kenya. What a surprise huh.

WHAT I LIKE
1. I like the whole storyline. The plots are unexpected. There's one plot twist and when you think that is all, there comes another twist.

2. I'm sorry but that is all

WHAT I DON'T LIKE
1. As usual all the technical thingy because I have poor imagination. At least I watched The Martian before I read the book so I could imagined better. But for Artemis case, I skip most of the technical parts. Feel a little bit guilty for that.

2. Jazz Bashara. I know she's the main character but seriously she was annoying and immature. If not for boobs and all, she is a male for me. And Jazz Bashara is the main reason I don't really enjoy this book.

RATING
5/10

But who knows I might reread this book and love it later when there's film adaptation of it. 20th Century Fox has bought the film rights for all I know. Even though Jazz is a Saudi's girl, I hope they would cast Jennifer Lawrence. Hahaha.

Based on my review, would you include Artemis in your to-read book?

Assalamualaikum. Hi.

It is Endurance by Scott Kelly! The parcel arrived on Thursday and I start reading it later that night after almost 15 minutes of admiring and smelling the book. Hahaha. Had been waiting for this one since March. I'm 1/4 thru the book and so far it's great as expected. . #endurance #endurancescottkelly #scottkelly #booktoread #nunureads

As I mentioned in my book Instagram (Reading Hut), I had been waiting for this book since Scott Kelly announced it. I was so excited when I find out there's an astronaut who lived aboard ISS for a year. By that time, it was near the end of that one year period so I was looking forward to his landing.

ABOUT THE BOOK (Goodreads)
Click Goodreads link above if you wish to read about this book from professional point of view. Hahaha. This book is written by Scott Kelly, NASA astronaut who spent a year in space. Scott wrote about his childhood, teenage life and his career choices that eventually lead him to become an astronaut. He also wrote about his one year journey on ISS. How he felt and cope with everything in that long period.

FUN FACTS
1. Scott Kelly has a twin brother, Mark Kelly who is also a retired astronaut, engineer and navy captain. Talking about twin bonding huh. When he commit for the one year long space flight, it also mean he agreed to become the specimen to identify effects of long term space flight on human for the rest of his life. But NASA never intended to use his twin brother in the experiment. Only when he blurted out in an interview that he saw this as an opportunity for the scientist because his twin brother could be the controlled specimen on Earth, only then NASA decided to include his brother as part of the specimen. If they were a normal twin brother, imagine Mark rage. Hahaha. But this is no ordinary twins we are talking about so I really don't know Mark's reaction and I'm dying to know.

NASA SENT ONE IDENTICAL TWIN BROTHER TO SPACE ← read about the first results of the experiment.

2. Scott Kelly wasn't alone on his journey for the record breaking of yearlong stay aboard because he's with a Russian cosmonaut, Mikhail Korneinko

3. The ISS sees sunrise every 90 minutes. That mean astronaut witness 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets. They could enjoy these views from seven windows of Cupola module. Or they could enjoy them outside during spacewalk, that if they are not busy concentrating the tasks on their hands which I believe require high concentration.

WHAT I LIKE
1. Scott's sense of humor. Space traveling is not a joke but I love it how Scott Kelly inject witty remarks here and there making the reader feel closer and  a part of his journey. He wore a gorilla suit his twin brother sent him inside his care-package once during that yearlong mission and give few laugh to his fellow colleagues.

2. His principle are so relatable.

"But I had decided a long time before always to say yes to whatever challenge came my way"

I mean you won't go anywhere if you refuse to take risk and hiding from problems and avoid challenges, no?

"It's important to me to admit mistakes immediately, and I don't make excuses"

Because defending yourself from your own mistakes is not cool. And you won't learn anything from it. What a waste, right

3. This book is about space and human journey on space exploration and if you don't know yet, I'm a sucker for anything outer space hahaha.

WHAT I DON'T LIKE
During Scott Kelly navy period of life. Don't get me wrong. It's his life journey and it's part of reasons why and how he ended up as an astronaut so it deserved spot in the book. But I know nothing about fighter jet and navy's life so those were parts I can't relate.

RATING
8/10

What's the last book you read?

Assalamualaikum. Hi.

Current read and as expected I'm obsessed with this book. Almost at each page I need to stop and admire the writer. It's not easy to write a sci-fi and make sure the facts are correct (of course there are few inaccurate things). Since I already watched the movie, I could only imagine Matt Damon as Mark Watney. Oh, by the way NASA reveiwed the movie script so there goes me drooling again. How does it feel to be a writer of the book checked by NASA? Well NASA only reviewed the movie script but the script were from the book. Major love for this book 10 out of 5 stars. Hahaha #nunureads #themartian #andyweir #andyweirthemartian #bookstagram

I ranted about this book in almost all of my social medias. Picture above is from my book instagram, Reading Hut. Click if you would like to follow 😉 but I warn you, I don't update much because I don't read much nowadays. Sad, I know.

I'm sure most people are familiar with its movie which titled the same. Even if you don't watch it, how could you not notice when every billboards in Klang Valley were printed with Matt Damon's fullscreen face? Okay I might exaggerate a bit there. But if you haven't watch this movie, stop reading right now, go watch it, comeback here and let's fangirling together later. I re-watched the movie few months ago and I searched high and low for this book since then. Well not really because the first thing I did was to check MPH Online. Since I forgot my MPH Online's username and password so I went straight to MPH NU Sentral to get my copy. Now about this book;

ABOUT THE BOOK (Goodreads)
You can click Goodreads link above. If you prefer a synopsis from my point of view, behold! This book is about Mark Watney, an astronaut who stranded on Mars alone after all his crew mates safely evacuated after a massive dust storm. His crew mates thought he was dead because they lost communication with Watney's bio monitor on his suit during the evacuation. Turns out Watney was knocked by the satellite dish and antenna of the satellite dish pierced into him leaving him injured and lost contact with Earth. Even with very low chance to survive, he didn't quit. He overcame each of every obstacles Mars threw at him using his engineering and botany skills.

FUN FACTS
1. About the author - Andy Weir worked on this book for about three years making sure the science was as accurate as possible. He first published this book for free on his blog for fun. Then people asked him to put it in a downloadable form, then to put it on Amazon for Kindle download which he did and charged his reader $0.99. Later did he knew it was one of Amazon's top five science fiction bestsellers and later The New York Times bestseller list. He wasn't a professional scientist nor a professional writer when he wrote the book. He was a software programmer who read rocket science for fun. He studies orbital dynamics as a hobby. He wrote his own computer programs using real Earth and Mars alignment data to determine the best theoretical date for the Ares 3 mission to launch

2. Even though Andy Weir tried to make the facts accurate, there's one glaring exception; the storm that caused everything. Mars atmosphere is too thin to drum such strong winds. For the movie, the producer sent the script to NASA. NASA make a note about that after they reviewed the script. But they cannot come out with alternative scenario. So NASA said, what the hell, it's only a movie. Okay I made up the last sentence but NASA just let that one go.

3. Mark Watney has two Masters degrees. One in botany and one in mechanical engineering. In reality, all astronauts are cross-trained so that they can assist in with any tasks that comes up in a mission.

WHAT I LIKE
1. Mark Watney's will to stay alive. There's this one quote inside the book. I even highlighted that part. "Let's take them one at a time". We could apply this in our life you know. When problems hits us, face them one at a time. There's no way we could settle them all in one go (unless the problems are chained to each other).

2. Mark Watney's sense of humor. I mean he was so funny I giggled sometimes and laughed like a retard sea lion most of the time. He actually fit my dream guy description, exceptionally clever and funny. Here's some quote from the book;

"I started the day with some nothin' tea. Nothin's tea is easy to make. First, get some hot water, then add nothin'"

"Me: This is obviously a clog. How about I take it apart and check the internal tubing?
NASA: (after five hours of deliberation) No. You'll fuck it up and die.
So I took it apart

"You know what? "Kilowatt-hour per sol" is a pain in the ass to say. I'm gonna invent a new scientific unit name. One kilowatt-hour per sol is... it can be anything... um... I suck at this.. I'll call it a "pirate-ninja"."

3. The fact that this book fall in science fiction category but I still can read it thanks to the movie. I never read science fiction book before just because I have bad imagination when it comes to things I never see.

WHAT I DON'T LIKE
1. All the mathematics and technical thingy parts. I hate numbers and I find it hard to imagine most of the technical parts. I know, I have no idea how I become engineer. But no surprise there as to why I'm not an astronaut.

RATING
8/10

Any suggestion on similar books you think I should read?
